Formerly the seat of the Lanna Kingdom and regarded as the northern capital of Thailand, Chiang Mai is entirely opposite to what first-timers to Thailand expect it to be. Unlike its southern counterparts, Chiang Mai is known for its laid-back vibes, numerous temples and monasteries, crowded local markets, natural and historical sites, and lush green countryside.
Chiang Mai offers an ideal blend of affordability, comfort, and a vibrant community, making it a top destination for remote workers. The warm climate, low cost of living, and high quality of life attract digital nomads from all over the globe. The Nimmanhaemin Road area, known as Nimman, is a hub for backpackers and digital nomads. It is renowned for its hip cafes, where you can enjoy specialty coffee, craft desserts, and unique brunch options.
Chiang Mai is also a backpacking haven where hiking, cycling, rafting, and many outdoor activities take precedence over a supercharged nightlife of drinks and loud music. Chiang Mai's historical center is a walled city with more than 30 temples from the ancient Lanna kingdom. Wat Phra Doi Suthep and Wat Phra Singh are some of this region's most visited Buddhist temples. Old-world temples like Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Umong are also famous.
Chiang Mai caters to those who love the outdoors and all things natural, with Doi Inthanon National Park catering to hikers and trekkers and the Chiang Mai Grand Canyon offering cliff jumping and swimming.
Cultural experiences are at the forefront in Chiang Mai. Dishes like Khao Soi are proudly presented to tourists looking to try the local flavors. If interested enough, one could even indulge in affordable cooking classes. In addition, you can visit the many hill tribes in the region, such as the Karen Hill Tribe Village, and interact with them.
Local bazaars like the Warorot Market and the Sunday and Saturday weekend markets offer a wide variety of souvenirs, clothes, and accessories and an unapologetic bartering course with the locals. Chiang Mai is also called the Meditation Capital of Thailand, as the Doi Suthep Vipassana Meditation Center is located here.
