Mauritius is located near the Tropic of Capricorn and enjoys a tropical climate all round the year. There are mainly two seasons here – the summer season from November to April and the winter season from June to September.

The months of October marks the transition of the season to summer in the Mauritius Islands. During this time, the mean temperatures are around 25 degrees centigrade which rises to about 29 degrees centigrade in the days during the hottest months of January and February. The temperatures of the surrounding seas of the islands rise during summertime. Humidity levels are also high in the summer months. The nearness to Tropic of Capricorn allows Mauritius to receive many hours of bright sunshine.

The summer season also receives the majority of the rainfall in Mauritius, although it rains throughout the year. Although, then the phenomenon of ‘micro-climate’ occurring here means the rainy spells are short and may be confined to small areas under clouds while the rest is sunny and clear. The amount varies from 900 mm in the coastal areas to 1,500 mm in the interior region. The months of January to March are also the period of tropical cyclones in the area.

The higher seawater temperatures attract a lot of marine animals here, making each dive highly fascinating for the viewers. A large variety of fish and other aquatic life can be found teeming underwater in the seas surrounding Mauritius, so scuba diving is the perfect activity to experience them firsthand.

This beach is also known as Deer Islands and was home to a fairly large deer population. Located on the eastern coast of the Flacq District of Mauritius Island, Ile Aux Cerfs covers about 100 hectares of land. There are multiple pristine beaches and beautiful lagoons among lush green inland vegetation all over the region. Tourists can reach here taking a guided boat or catamaran tours and spend a day filled with fun and frolic. Voted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, Trou Aux Biches is well-known for its lavish amenities and boutique hotels. Its beaches are among the must-see tourist locations during a holiday in Mauritius.  Reachable via road from Port Louis and the airport, the town has all the modern facilities for a comfortable family holiday. Activities here include snorkelling and boat-riding, the nearby Mauritius Aquarium and Triolet Hindu Temple are added tourist attractions.  

8. Enjoy the Biodiversity of Black River Gorges National Park

The biodiversity of Mauritius is exemplified in this forest conservation project in its south-western hilly region. The Black River Gorges National Park was officially started in 1994 and covers about sixty-seven square kilometres. The park protects the rain forest in the area and consists of the upper, lower and marshy heath regions. A trek through the different hilly trails in the forests reveals many natural treasures of the island. The Mauritian Flying Fox, an indigenous animal species can be found here, along with many of the native bird population. Over three hundred different varieties of flowering plants add beauty to the area. Tourists can use the convenience of two information centres and picnic areas in the park for a day of fun-filled activity.

9. The Cascading Tamarind Waterfalls

Another popular tourist attraction in Mauritius is the Tamarind Waterfalls, a series of seven cascading streams coming from a maximum height of 250 meters. This iconic spot is located in the south-western part of the island and is formed by the Rivere Tamarin and is about two kilometres from the Mare Aux Vacoas Lake. Visitors can take a bath under the falls or just enjoy the scenic beauty all around. The views of La Morne Mountain and the western coastal region of Mauritius from the Tamarind Falls is worthy enough to be a lifetime memory.

10. Celebrate the Summertime Festivals

Mauritius is a multi-ethnic and multilingual country - people of different faiths and cultures have made this island-nation their chosen home. So, it is natural that they will celebrate their festivals here also. In the summer months, Diwali, Christmas and the Chinese New Year are the most popular cultural celebrations which reflect the diverse culture and their presence in the country.

Diwali - The festival of lights takes place in the months of October or November, and is celebrated to mark the return of Sri Ram to Ajodhya after defeating Ravana. People light up their homes with oil lamps or diyas and burst firecrackers.

Christmas - 25th of December is celebrated all over the world to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians decked in their best visit churches for prayers in the morning and enjoy it with friends and family.

Chinese New Year - This festival ushers in the traditional Chinese New Year and is celebrated by people with ethnic roots in China. The months of January and February usually host this event which is also known as the Spring Festival.
